Adam Kozak is the youngest Grand Master of Hungary. “I want to be in the top 50.”

My guest from today is Adam Kozak, a 20-year-old young player from Hungary. He earned the title of Grand Master at only 17 years old and he also has both national and international medals: he won the 2019 European Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship. He wants to play chess at the highest level and wants to be in top players as soon as possible.
A: I saw that you play quite often in Romania. What is your opinion about the Romanian chess?
K: It is quite nice, I like to play there. It is rising nowadays, you have a lot of strong rapid tournaments, the league it s also strong. I think it s going on a good path, especially the support of the federation.
A: You are the youngest grand master of Hungary. How did you get to this performance?
K: I become grand master just after I turned 17. I made my first norm when I was 15, and in 2019 in the summer I made norms in back to back tournaments. It was quite nice. I had 2 coaches back then and I used a lot of chessbase😊. I also did a lot of tactics and watched a lot of chess games to learn a little more from others. I think it is important to watch other people play, especially those who are good theoreticians.
A: What is the most memorable moment in your career?
K: I am in between World Junior Championship and World Cup. Probably the most serious was World Cup, but my favourite is World Junior. In general the environment was nice and I was playing great chess.
A: I saw that you participated at the European Senior Championship. Were you happy with the result or were you hoping for a better one?
K: In general I can say that I am happy with the result, but of course I wanted to qualify for the World Cup which I did not, so I can not say I was fully satisfied. Overall I played quite strong positons, I played with 6 players above 2600 and even 3 of my opponents came out in the first 10. For example I played against Kirill Shevchenko, your compatriot I could say😊. It was a great tournament.
A: What is your long term goal K: In the long run I would like to be in the top 50, I would not look forward than that and I hope this can happen in the next 2-3 years.
A: Who is your favourite for the World Championship and what do you think about Magnus' refusal to defend the title?
K: I was also thinking about this question. I think Nepo is gonna win, but it would more interesting if Ding will win, it will become much more competitive. I think that if Nepo wins the first 5 matches, he has a good chance of winning. But on the other hand, if he makes mistakes or draws, I think Ding has a very high chance of winning. It also matters a lot in what shape Ding is, because in 2020 or 2021 he lost the first two games. So far he is in good shape so we will see. I think Nepo has the first chance, but it will be a close fight. And about Magnus he already won everything so he can do what he feels.
A: Bobby Fischer said that chess started to lose its creativity and is now based on memorization. How do you think about this statement?
K: I don't think it's losing his creativity, but definitely matters how many hours of chess you have studied. It's like in life, the more you study, the better you become. And it's not just memorization, it's about understanding the game and nowadays the psychological aspect is very important too. The game is evolving to another level. In the end I don't think it is correct, but there are also some correct arguments in this statement.
A: What's the most important lesson you have learned from playing chess?
K: For me is just to understand what you are doing and why you are doing that, just like in life, to acknowledging your own moves. I think that chess teaches you to be patient. Sometimes you have to understand that you can't win every single game, for example if your opponent played like a genius what can you do, it happens.
A: What is the biggest misconception people have about chess players?
K: Probably that they are smart and good at scientific stuff. Me for example, I am passionate about history and literature. I think there is a difference between being smart and being good at something. I believe that you have to know a little bit of everything.
A: Do you think that life of an athlete is harder than attending college and then looking for a job?
K: I would not say it's harder, because you have a clear path and it's clear that you love what you do, but it's also good just to go to college, study and just living. I think both are difficult in their own way.
A: What's your advice for someone who wants to get better at chess?
K: Basically just practice the game, open the chessbase and try to analize with the computer, you can learn a lot just by doing that and also do a lot of tactics on chess.com. It's very important to play, at competitions or on websites. Practice makes perfect😊. The more you play, the more you study the games, the better you will be. Playing many games and many positions, in the end you get to understand and know them. In conclusion just play.
A: In the end can you tell me your favourite city in Romania and an Romanian food?
K: It has to be Constanța. I played there quite often, but the area is beautiful and I like the beach and I have really great memories. As for food, I don't have a favourite one, but I really like a drink that I only drank here. It's a very sweet iced juice and you can buy ut from machines on the beach. I could drink 10 a day.

„Vreau să fiu în top 15”.
Invitatul meu de astăzi este Adam Kozak, un tânăr jucător de 20 de ani din Ungaria. A câștigat titlul de Mare Maestru la doar 17 ani și are medalii atât naționale cât și internaționale: a câștigat Campionatul European de șah rapid și blitz 2018. Își dorește să joace șah la cel mai înalt nivel și să fie cât mai curând în primii top 10 jucători din lume.
A: Am văzut că joci destul de des în România. Ce părere ai despre șahul românesc?
K: Este destul de frumos, îmi place să joc acolo. În zilele noastre este în creștere, se organizează o mulțime de turnee de rapid puternice, liga este și ea puternică. Cred că merge pe un drum bun, mai ales prin sprijinul federației.
A: Ești cel mai tânăr mare maestru al Ungariei. Cum ai ajuns la această performanță?
K: Am devenit mare maestru imediat după ce am împlinit 17 ani. Mi-am făcut prima normă la 15 ani, iar în 2019, vara, am făcut norme turneu după turneu. A fost destul de frumos. Aveam 2 antrenori pe atunci și am folosit mult ChessBasse-ul😊. De asemenea, am făcut o mulțime de tactică și m-am uitat la o mulțime de partide de șah pentru a învăța puțin mai multe de la alții. Cred că este important să vezi partide ale celorlalți jucători, în special pe celor care sunt buni teoreticieni.
A: Care este cel mai memorabil moment din cariera ta?
K: Între Campionatul Mondial de juniori și Cupa Mondială. Probabil cea mai importantă a fost Cupa Mondială, dar preferata mea este Campionatul Mondial de Juniori. În general, mediul era plăcut și am jucat un șah bun.
A: Am văzut că ai participat la Campionatul European de seniori. Ai fost mulțumit de rezultat sau ai sperat la unul mai bun?
K: În general pot spune că sunt mulțumit de rezultat, dar bineînțeles că am vrut să mă calific la Cupa Mondială, ceea ce nu am reușit, așa că nu pot spune că am fost pe deplin mulțumit.
Per total, am jucat poziții destul de puternice, am jucat cu 6 jucători peste 2600 și chiar 3 dintre adversarii mei s-au clasat în primii 10.
De exemplu, am jucat împotriva lui Kirill Șevcenko, compatriotul vostru, aș putea spune 😊. A fost un turneu bun.
A: Care este obiectivul tău pe termen lung?
K: Pe termen lung, mi-aș dori să fiu în top 15, nu am așteptari mai mari de atât. Și sper că acest lucru se va întâmpla în următorii 2-3 ani.
A: Cine este favoritul tău la Campionatul Mondial și ce părere ai despre refuzul lui Magnus Carlsen de a-și apăra titlul?
K: Și eu mă gândeam la această întrebare. Cred că Nepo va câștiga, dar ar fi mai interesant dacă Ding va câștiga, o să devină mult mai competitiv. Cred că dacă Nepo se va impune în primele 5 meciuri, are șanse mari să câștige. Dar pe de altă parte, dacă greșește sau remize, cred că Ding are șanse foarte mari de câștig. Contează foarte mult și în ce formă este Ding, pentru că în 2020 sau 2021 a pierdut primele două jocuri. Până acum este într-o formă bună, așa că vom vedea. Cred că Nepo are prima șansă, dar va fi o luptă strânsă. Și despre Magnus a câștigat deja totul, astfel încât să poată face ceea ce simte.
A: Bobby Fischer a spus că șahul a început să-și piardă din creativitatea și acum se bazează pe memorare. Ce crezi despre această afirmație?
K: Nu cred că își pierde creativitatea, dar cu siguranță contează câte ore de șah ai studiat. Este ca în viață, cu cât studiezi mai mult, cu atât devii mai bun. Și nu este vorba doar de memorare, este vorba despre înțelegerea jocului, iar în zilele noastre aspectul psihologic este foarte important. Jocul evoluează la un alt nivel. În cele din urmă, nu cred că este corect, dar există și câteva argumente corecte în această afirmație.
A: Care este cea mai importantă lecție pe care ai învățat-o jucând șah?
K: Pentru mine să înțeleg ce faci și de ce faci asta, la fel ca în viață, să-ți recunoști propriile mișcări. Cred că șahul te învață să ai răbdare. Uneori trebuie să înțelegi că nu poți câștiga fiecare joc, de exemplu, dacă adversarul tău a jucat ca un geniu ce poți face, se întâmplă. 😊
A: Care este cea mai mare greșită concepție pe care oamenii o au despre jucătorii de șah?
K: Probabil că sunt inteligenți și buni la chestii științifice. Eu de exemplu sunt pasionat de istorie și literatură. Cred că există o diferență între a fi inteligent și a fi bun la ceva. Cred că trebuie să știi puțin din toate.
A: Crezi că viața unui sportiv este mai grea decât mersul la facultate și apoi căutarea un loc de muncă?
K: Nu aș spune că e mai grea, pentru că ai o cale clară și e clar că îți place ceea ce faci, dar e bine și să mergi la facultate, să studiezi și să trăiești??. Cred că ambele sunt dificile în felul lor.
A: Care este sfatul tău pentru cineva care vrea să devină mai bun la șah?
K: Practic doar exersați jocul, deschideți baza de șah și încercați să analizați cu computerul, puteți învăța multe doar făcând asta și de asemenea, faceți o mulțime de diagrame tactice pe chess.com. Este foarte important să jucați la competiții sau pe site-uri web. Practica te face perfect😊. Cu cât joci mai mult, cu cât studiezi mai mult partide, cu atât vei fi mai bun. Jucând multe partide și multe poziții, până la urmă ajungi să le înțelegi și să le cunoști. În concluzie doar joacă.
A: Pe finalul interviului îmi poți spune orașul tău preferat din România și o mâncare românească?
K: Trebuie să fie Constanța. Am jucat acolo destul de des, dar zona este frumoasă și îmi place plaja și am amintiri cu adevărat grozave. Cât despre mâncare, nu am una preferată, dar îmi place foarte mult o băutură pe care am băut-o doar aici. Este un suc cu gheață foarte dulce și îl puteți cumpăra de la aparatele de pe plajă. Aș putea să beau 10 pe zi.
